Try out Vertical ReadingIn this lesson students will be required to assess two articles by reading vertically using only the information available on the websites of both organizations like as berita terbaru indonesia. The students will then be required to revisit the content using lateral reading. When students have completed the first round of assessment After the first round of evaluations, have a representative from each group to present the findings of their group to the class. Your students must know that they performed vertical reading in this round. They read through the information on the websites of the organizations. Let the students know that they will have two opportunities to assess the pages. As part of this exercise students should spend five minutes reviewing the information contained in the two articles, as well as on the web pages of the Academy of Pediatrics and the College of Pediatrics. Then students should choose the one they believe is more reliable. Students should not visit other websites in order to know more about the Academy of Pediatrics and the College of Pediatricians. Experiment with Lateral Reading Students should be asked to take part in another round of five minutes of assessments, using the same groups from the previous lesson. This time, students should be focusing on finding information about the two organizations who published the original article by visiting other websites. They should answer these questions in groups: What interesting information did you find by visiting other websites? What websites were the most beneficial to you? What can this information do to change or strengthen conclusions drawn in the initial round of interviews? Which do you believe to be more trustworthy? After students have completed the second round of assessment After the second round of evaluations, have a representative of each group to share their group's findings to the class. Explain to your students that during this round, they practiced reading laterally, as they read about the organizations on the internet. The information they read about on other websites could help students gain an understanding of the credibility of their work or any biases they might have. Extension: The News Practice the News Have your students bring in news articles or research studies they find on their social media feeds, or elsewhere online. Review the news article in a later time as a class to learn more about the person who wrote it and how credible it was.
